By diving deeper into administrative techniques, you will acquire the knowledge to become a successful storage administrator.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"mailto:michelle.richardson@fastlaneus.com \">Michelle Richardson<\/a> at Fastlane helped me with arranging my training.\u00a0 Originally I intended to buy the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastlaneus.com\/course\/na-dot87mb\">administration bundle<\/a>, which combines the ONTAP 8.0 7-Mode Administration instructor lead training with 3 extra online advanced classes, NetApp V-Series: Fundamentals, SnapManager for Virtual Infrastructure Overview and Installation, and SnapManager for Hyper-V:Overview and Installation.\u00a0 The bundle\u00a0is a new offering, and I was one of the first students to ask for it.\u00a0 When Michelle tried to register me for it, it turned out that NetApp didn&#8217;t have a way to actually provide it (yet).\u00a0\u00a0 (They say they&#8217;ll happily sell you a bundle now &#8211; March 2011).<\/p>\n<p>I flew US Airways through Phoenix, on time all the way.\u00a0 I love going through Phoenix.\u00a0 LAX sux.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1240\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/greg.porter.name\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/md_system_source_outside.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1240\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1240  \" title=\"md_system_source_outside\" src=\"https:\/\/greg.porter.name\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/md_system_source_outside-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"System Source at The Mall in Columbia, MD\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1240\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">System Source at The Mall in Columbia, MD<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Fastlane instructor for my class was <a href=\"mailto:debbie.sellars@fastlaneus.com\">Debbie Sellars<\/a>.\u00a0 She has a *LOT* of experience in this field (how many people do you know with NetApp filers at home&#8230;)\u00a0\u00a0 She&#8217;s been teaching this class (and many others) for a long time and she does a great job.\u00a0 Both\u00a0she and her husband, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pub\/stephen-sellars\/3\/a85\/3b1\">Stephen Sellars<\/a>, teach this\u00a0administration class, NCDA boot camps, and lots of other classes like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastlaneus.com\/course\/fl-vvna\">VMware vSphere on NetApp (VVNA)<\/a><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1316\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/greg.porter.name\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMG_0151.JPG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1316\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1316\" title=\"debbie_sellars_dot87m\" src=\"https:\/\/greg.porter.name\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMG_0151-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Debbie Sellars Teaching DOT87M\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1316\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Debbie Sellars Teaching DOT87M<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The class uses three NetApp three course\u00a0books, Data ONTAP 8.0 7-Mode Administration, Student Guide: Volume 1, Student Guide: Volume 2, and Exercise Guide.\u00a0 Each student gets a nicely bound set.\u00a0 (The course materials\u00a0are *NOT* available online.)\u00a0 Volume 1 has the first 10 chapters covering basics, physical and logical storage concepts, networking, NFS, CIFS, SAN and more, a couple of hundred pages.\u00a0 The second volume (chapters 11-19) covers most of the advanced features like snapshot, high availability, backup and recovery solutions, and an introduction to WAFL, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Write_Anywhere_File_Layout\">Write Anywhere File Layout<\/a>.\u00a0 The Exercise Guide has all of the hands on labs.<\/p>\n<p>Training like this leads to NetApp certifications, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.netapp.com\/us\/services\/university\/certifications\/ncda.html\">NetApp Certified Data Management Administrator (NCDA)<\/a>.\u00a0 With the old ONTAP 7.3 , the NCDA certification consisted of 2 tests,\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.netapp.com\/us\/services\/university\/certification-nso-153.html\">NS0 153 Storage Networking<\/a><!--endclickprintinclude--> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.netapp.com\/us\/services\/university\/certification-nso-163.html\">NS0 163 Data Protection Solutions<\/a><!--endclickprintinclude-->.\u00a0 In its ONTAP 7.3 incarnation, this class covered the topics in NS0 153.<\/p>\n<p>After the release of ONTAP 8.0 in 2009, the NCDA certification was updated and collapsed into one test for ONTAP 8.0, NS0 154 &#8211; Data ONTAP 8.0 7-Mode Administrator.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 This test still covers the topics that used to be on the two 7.3 tests, now combined into one exam.\u00a0\u00a0 So to properly prepare for 8.0 NCDA with instructor led training, you need to take Data ONTAP 8.0 7-Mode Administration (DOT87M) (this class) as well the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastlaneus.com\/course\/na-ancdabc87\">Accelerated NCDA Boot Camp Data ONTAP 8.0 7-Mode (ANCDABC87)<\/a> or the equivalent.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1239\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/greg.porter.name\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/md_system_source_inside.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1239\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1239 \" title=\"md_system_source_inside\" src=\"https:\/\/greg.porter.name\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/md_system_source_inside-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"System Source is in Suite 700\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1239\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">System Source, Suite 700<\/p><\/div>\n<p>They\u00a0have good hands on labs.\u00a0 Each student is provided their own workstation.\u00a0 They connect to their own &#8220;pod&#8221; of virtualized systems through <a href=\"https:\/\/labs.lablogin.com\">https:\/\/labs.lablogin.com<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0Each student\u00a0gets access to two <a href=\"https:\/\/now.netapp.com\/NOW\/download\/tools\/simulator\/ontap\/8.0\/\">ONTAP 8.0 simulator<\/a> virtual machines, a Windows Server 2008 virtual machine, and a CentOS Linux vm, in a small network complete with a Windows domain, DNS, and other common tools.\u00a0 With this environment, it is straightforward to do all common lab tasks covered in the Exercise Guide.\u00a0 The labs were recently revised from ONTAP 7 to ONTAP 8 and moved from physical (actual) filers to ONTAP 8.0 sims.\u00a0 There&#8217;s a few minor hiccups along the way, but in general they are fine.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Extra-curricular Activities<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Debbie says the best crab cakes in Maryland are at <a href=\"https:\/\/gandmcrabcakes.com\/\">G&amp;M Restaurant in Linthicum Heights<\/a>.\u00a0 I was there after 8 PM on a Wednesday, the place was packed and they were awesome!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1328\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gandmcrabcakes.com\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1328\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1328 \" title=\"crabcake_1\" src=\"https:\/\/greg.porter.name\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/crabcake_1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"G&amp;M Crab Cake\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1328\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">G&amp;M Crab Cake<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After class on Friday, I took 29 South to Silver Spring, and parked by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wmata.com\/\">Metro Station<\/a>.\u00a0 I rode the Red Line into DC to Union Station.\u00a0 I then got a ticket for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grayline.com\/grayline\/destinations\/us\/washingtondc.go?mode=activityDetail&amp;apid=1815&amp;sid=487\">Gray Line&#8217;s &#8220;DC After Dark&#8221; bus tour<\/a>.\u00a0 (I&#8217;ve taken Gray Line tours before, notably in New York City, and I&#8217;ve always had a good experience.)<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1330\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/greg.porter.name\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/lincoln_memorial.JPG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1330\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1330\" title=\"lincoln_memorial\" src=\"https:\/\/greg.porter.name\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/lincoln_memorial-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Even at 10 PM, the Memorial was busy\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1330\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Even at 10 PM, the Memorial was busy<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;Eric with a &#8216;C&#8217;
