{"id":1435,"date":"2011-03-25T15:35:36","date_gmt":"2011-03-25T22:35:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/greg.porter.name\/wordpress\/?p=1435"},"modified":"2011-03-27T11:26:06","modified_gmt":"2011-03-27T18:26:06","slug":"comptia-a-passed-220-701-comptia-a-essentials-and-220-701-comptia-a-practical-application-today","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/greg.porter.name\/wordpress\/?p=1435","title":{"rendered":"CompTIA A+ &#8211; Passed 220-701: CompTIA A+ Essentials and 220-701: CompTIA A+ Practical Application Today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/greg.porter.name\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/porter_aplus.pdf\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1470\" title=\"A+_CE\" src=\"https:\/\/greg.porter.name\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/A+_CE-300x152.jpg\" alt=\"A+_CE\" width=\"300\" height=\"152\" srcset=\"https:\/\/greg.porter.name\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/A+_CE-300x152.jpg 300w, https:\/\/greg.porter.name\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/A+_CE-1024x519.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/greg.porter.name\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/A+_CE.jpg 1424w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I passed the 2 required exams for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.comptia.org\/certifications\/listed\/a.aspx\">CompTIA A+<\/a> today.\u00a0 These are entry level exams, and if you have some computer experience, they are not too challenging.\u00a0 The reason I took these, and maybe why you should as well, is that it is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.giac.org\/8570\/\">one of the required certifications for Federal Information Assurance employees<\/a>, as recently required by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dtic.mil\/whs\/directives\/corres\/pdf\/857001m.pdf\">DoDD 8570<\/a>.\u00a0 Who knows, maybe you&#8217;ll be a Federal employee (or contractor) someday&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Read more on what they were like and why you should take them&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Typically, CompTIA A+ is considered an entry level certification.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The reg says: &#8220;The certification requirements of this Manual apply to DoD civilian employees, military personnel, [Local Nationals], and support contractors performing [Information Assurance] functions&#8230;&#8221;\u00a0 When I used to work as a civilian Federal employee (GS-2210-13) at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.calguard.ca.gov\/uspfo\/Pages\/default.aspx\">United States Property and Fiscal Office for California<\/a>, even though I was assigned as a system administrator, I was considered to have IA duties, and was therefore required to be certified as specified in this regulation.\u00a0 Although I&#8217;m happy in my current role at Cal Poly, I like to keep my options open, and I might be a Federal employee (or contractor) again someday.\u00a0 (If nothing else I&#8217;d like to contribute to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsp.gov\/index.shtml\">Thrift Savings Program<\/a> again.\u00a0 TSP rocks!)<\/p>\n<p>As far as getting ready to take these, they were straightforward to prepare for.\u00a0 One gotcha is to make sure that you get test prep materials for the latest version of these, the &#8220;2009 Objectives&#8221;.\u00a0 There are still a lot of preparation materials out there for the old &#8220;2006 Objectives&#8221; which are deprecated now.<\/p>\n<p>I used <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/CompTIA-220-701-220-702-Exam-Cram\/dp\/0789747928\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1301091087&amp;sr=8-1\">David L.
