{"id":1808,"date":"2011-06-30T19:56:14","date_gmt":"2011-07-01T02:56:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/greg.porter.name\/wordpress\/?p=1808"},"modified":"2011-08-02T15:57:14","modified_gmt":"2011-08-02T22:57:14","slug":"replacing-a-motherboard-in-a-netapp-fas-3140-storage-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/greg.porter.name\/wordpress\/?p=1808","title":{"rendered":"Replacing a Motherboard in a NetApp FAS 3140 Storage System"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m located in a fairly rural area, far away from our friendly local NetApp service engineer.\u00a0 I recently had some hardware issues with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.netapp.com\/us\/products\/storage-systems\/fas3100\/fas3100.html\">FAS 3140 storage system<\/a>.\u00a0 After opening a ticket on <a href=\"https:\/\/now.netapp.com\/\">NetApp&#8217;s support site<\/a>, and trying various things to get it working, NetApp suggested that we replace the motherboard.\u00a0 They gave me the option of doing it myself.\u00a0 I like doing things like this, so I said sure.\u00a0 Read more for a discussion of how it went&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->It&#8217;s actually pretty easy.\u00a0 This is not a highly available (HA) configuration, it has a single controller.\u00a0 Thankfully it was not in use yet, so I could just turn it off and do the swap.\u00a0 If you had a HA cluster, you could issue a &#8216;cf takeover&#8217; command on the good head, which would gracefully take over from the bad head (the surviving head would do the work of both) and do the service.\u00a0 When you are done, you do a giveback.\u00a0 In my case though (no HA) I just had to turn the filer off and do the swap.<\/p>\n<p>First off, NetApp sent me the documentation on this.\u00a0 They make good docs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/greg.porter.name\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/MB_FAS3100-008.pdf\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1807\" title=\"MB_FAS3100-008_Page_02\" src=\"https:\/\/greg.porter.name\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/MB_FAS3100-008_Page_02-791x1024.png\" alt=\"MB_FAS3100-008_Page_02\" width=\"475\" height=\"614\" srcset=\"https:\/\/greg.porter.name\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/MB_FAS3100-008_Page_02-791x1024.png 791w, https:\/\/greg.porter.name\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/MB_FAS3100-008_Page_02-231x300.png 231w, https:\/\/greg.porter.name\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/MB_FAS3100-008_Page_02.png 1701w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 475px) 100vw, 475px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Since in my case, I have the simplest case (no HA), I just had to turn it off, take it out of the rack, and set it side by side with the good system they sent.\u00a0 They sent an entire replacement system, so all I needed to do was swap the various accessories over from the bad one to the good one.\u00a0 This included the NVRAM, NVRAM battery, RLM, DIMMS, CF card, etc.\u00a0 Make sure you move them all, it&#8217;s easy to miss the CF card or NVRAM, they are sort of hidden up inside the case.\u00a0 One thing I failed to see in the doc was to make sure to make sure to move the NVRAM battery <strong>*BEFORE*<\/strong> you move the NVRAM DIMM.\u00a0 If you are carefully following the doc, you won&#8217;t miss this.\u00a0 (It didn&#8217;t seem to matter, whew&#8230;)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/greg.porter.name\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/working_on_netapp.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1810\" title=\"working_on_netapp\" src=\"https:\/\/greg.porter.name\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/working_on_netapp-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"working_on_netapp\" width=\"472\" height=\"354\" srcset=\"https:\/\/greg.porter.name\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/working_on_netapp-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/greg.porter.name\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/working_on_netapp-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/greg.porter.name\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/working_on_netapp.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 472px) 100vw, 472px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s it.\u00a0 I put the replacement back in the rack, turned it on, and it all worked fine.<\/p>\n<p>You probably should have your NetApp engineer do this, but it really wasn&#8217;t so hard.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m located in a fairly rural area, far away from our friendly local NetApp service engineer.\u00a0 I recently had some hardware issues with a FAS 3140 storage system.\u00a0 After opening a ticket on NetApp&#8217;s support site, and trying various things&hellip;
