Really.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocksclusters.org\/\">Rocks<\/a> is a modified CentOS Linux distribution specifically made for high performance cluster computing from <span style=\"color: black;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sdsc.edu\">San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC)<\/a><\/span>. I don&#8217;t know of a good reason *NOT* to run Rocks if you have a cluster.\u00a0 Your tax dollars pay<a href=\"https:\/\/users.sdsc.edu\/~phil\/homepage.html\"> the Rocks people<\/a> to build and maintain the Rocks cluster Linux software distribution.\u00a0 They do a good job.\u00a0 Most common cluster tools and software packages come already included.\u00a0 You can literally get a multinode cluster completely loaded and online in a couple of hours.<\/p>\n<p>It was time for<a href=\"https:\/\/greg.porter.name\/wordpress\/?p=876\"> ravel.csc.calpoly.edu<\/a> to get a facelift.\u00a0 It was running an older version of Rocks, and has been getting cranky recently.\u00a0 I loaded the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocksclusters.org\/wordpress\/?page_id=114\">latest stable Rocks 5.3<\/a> on it.\u00a0 No real issues, like usual, Rocks is easy to load.\u00a0 The only issue I had is that the built in DHCP service tried to assign the IP address of the interconnect switch to a compute node.\u00a0 That was my fault, because I didn&#8217;t tell Rocks that the switch was using that address like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocksclusters.org\/roll-documentation\/base\/5.3\/install-compute-nodes.html\">the install doc told me to<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocksclusters.org\/rocks-doc\/papers\/two-pager\/paper.pdf\">Rocks Avalanche scalable installer<\/a> uses peer to peer technology to help load compute nodes, so the more nodes you have, the faster they load.\u00a0 Really.\u00a0 Nodes that have already started their loads help out new nodes, unburdening the head node from sole loading duty.\u00a0 It takes maybe thirty minutes to load all of my compute nodes.\u00a0 Even if I had hundreds or thousands, reloading them all from scratch would just take a couple of hours.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rocks is a modified CentOS Linux distribution specifically made for high performance cluster computing from San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC).
