Want to learn Linux? Take Cuesta College CIS 222, Introduction to Unix/Linux

CIS 222 is a Cuesta College class on Unix and Linux.  It will be offered in Spring 2011 (next semester).

There’s a lot to learning any operating system, especially a complicated one like Unix or Linux. One way to know what’s important about an operating system, especially one used in business, is to look at the certification exams available for it. This class will introduce Unix and Linux from the angle of preparing you for the CompTIA Linux+ certification.  CompTIA says: “CompTIA Linux+ Powered by LPI is a high-stakes, vendor-neutral certification that validates the fundamental knowledge and skills required of junior Linux administrators.”

Interestingly, if you want Linux certifications, getting CompTIA Linux+ also immediately qualifies you for the Linux Professional Institute’s LPIC-1 certification, as well as Novell’s Certified Linux Administrator (CLA). Take 2 tests, get 3 certifications!

MCITP:SA, Completed! – Passed the Microsoft 070-646 Pro: Windows Server 2008, Server Administrator exam today

I recently completed my Microsoft Certified Information Technology Professional: Enterprise Administrator certification. This certification requires you to pass 5 exams.  It turns out that if I took one more exam, 070-646 Pro: Windows Server 2008, Server Administrator, I’d qualify for Microsoft Certified Information Technology Professional: Server Administrator (MCITP: SA) as well.

It was pretty straight forward.  After all of the other Windows tests I’ve been passing, this one was pretty easy.  I studied for 2 weeks.  I used the Microsoft Press book for 070-646 to study with (which comes with 2 pretty good practice tests included), and I bought an additional Kaplan Self Test practice exam.  The actual test was sort of like the practice exams, unlike many of the Microsoft exams I’ve seen recently.

Introduction to Desktop Virtualization

I was recently asked to prepare a brief presentation on desktop virtualization.  I’ve been through quite a few desktop virtualization projects throughout the years.   Some went off better than others.  I learned a few tidbits along the way.

I thought I’d share.  Click on the image to get the PowerPoint slides.

MCITP:EA, Completed! – Passed the Microsoft 070-680 Windows 7, Configuration exam today

I just completed my Microsoft Certified Information Technology Professional: Enterprise Administrator certification (the highest level professional certification for Windows Server 2008 – sort of like MCSE was for 2003 or 2000.  Note that there is “no such thing” as MCSA or MCSE for 2008, they were replaced by MCITP: SA and MCITP: EA.)

This was my fifth and final exam for MCITP: EA.  This one covers Windows 7 configuration.  It was pretty straight forward, after all of the other Windows tests I’ve been passing, this one was pretty easy.  I studied for 2 weeks.
