Bonus! Getting Novell CLA automatically awards Novell Data Center Technical Specialist!

I recently earned Novell Certified Linux Administrator (CLA).  (Note that I passed the 2 CompTIA Linux+ exams, then forwarded these to LPI to get LPIC-1, and then forwarded LPIC-1 to Novell.)

Turns out that earning Novell CLA, also qualifies you for Novell Data Center Technical Specialist (DCTS)!  This is one of the specializations for solution providers and system integrators in Novell’s PartnerNet.  So by passing the 2 CompTIA Linux+ exams, you qualify for FOUR certifications – Linux+, LPIC-1, Novell CLA, and Novell DCTS.

  1. Yes indeed, I got LPIC-1 (and Novell CLA and Novell DCTS) based on passing the Linux+. I blogged about each step along the way. They are separate posts, though, so I now see why it may be a bit confusing. Here’s a summary of the process:
    1. Register at LPI. Get a LPI number.
    2. Take the CompTIA Linux+ exams. At the beginning of each test, the test engine will ask if you want your scores forwarded to LPI. Say yes.
    3. Wait a few days for the scores to hit CompTIA. You’ll get a certificate in email.
    4. Wait a few days for the scores to hit LPI. You get a certificate in email.
    5. Once you are LPIC-1, forward the scores to Novell. Wait a few days. You’ll get both Novell CLA and Novell DCTS.
    6. Profit! (Had to say it, sorry.) 🙂

So that’s four (!) certifications (Linux+, LPIC-1, CLA, DCTS) based on just passing Linux+! Good luck!

  2. Thanks Greg for your wonderful guide I followed it all and have received email confirmation from LPI about my LPIC-1 and also received email confirmation from Novell about Novell CLA, not heard anything about the DCTS one tho.

Do they post certificates to you? Only got one certificate so far and that was the CompTIA Linux+ one on PDF from the CompTIA website after logging in and confirming my demographics. I trust they ship that one out for sure but I am not sure about LPI or Novell.

Thanks for your help, let me know about the paper certificates.

    Kind Regards
    Richard

  3. Ignore the above, i got got Novell CLA and DCTS as you said! PDF Certs on email!

    Thank you so much!

  4. Any idea if you get LPIC-1, can you forward that to CompTIA to get Linux+ ?

  5. Hi Greg, first, thank you, this post helped me choose to get the CompTia first.

I just take the three certifications there a week ago, but I did not get the certification Novell DCTS, do you know if I need to request this certification or if they really send to me?

  6. It’s been a while, but I think they sent both at the same time. I was unaware of the existence of DCTS, so I was a bit surprised. Someone just wrote me within the last few weeks, and he got both after passing, so hopefully you do too. Good luck!

  7. Wow!. I had heard about this from a few of my fellow admins, but Hadn’t actually verified with anyone doing this. Thanks! And you’ve definitely motivated me to make this move, and get this done. Particularly since CompTIA has started migrating away from the ‘lifetime’ certifications that now expire. Thanks for the guidance! Will update will I complete this after I’ve followed in your foot steps!

  9. All:

I would like to do NOVEL Linux Professional certification,is there any offers for Linux+ certified engineers which is given to RHCE’s person.

  10. I posted this on another blog post here, but I’ll reiterate here. I went through the above steps and received Linux+, LPIC-1, Novell CLA 11, DC Tech Spec, and SUSE 11 Tech Spec.

Since LPI has now partnered with SUSE, there is another certification to get.

  13. Well, I got certs, no 3-5 metioned above after just getting no 2 (LPIC 1), without following the Comptia Linux+ route. So the first one is not necessary in order to get the novell certifications. Getting LPIC-1 seems to be enough.

  14. Hi greg:

Could you please confirm this is still true. I’ve checked the novell/suse web and surfed the web and, although I did find the CLA cert page (I already received their email confirming the convalidation) I cannot find anything about the DCTS

  15. @Terry
I cannot find anything about the DCTS too, and SUSE 11 Tech Spec, so I just got CLA, Linux + and LPIC

    Novell terminated the certificate??

  16. I can confirm that as well. No DCTS certificate (at least one has not been mailed to me). I sure would like to get this. Anyone know how?

    thanks
    David

  17. Hi Greg,
Has Novell ceased to grant Linux+ /LPIC-1 / CLA holders the Novell DCTS certifications now? They sent me the CLA but not DCTS.

  18. When I pass Coptia Linux+ exam I got. LPIC-1, SUSE CLA 11, SUSE 11 Tech Spec.

  19. I passed Linux+, got the LPIC-1, then the Suse CLA 11 and Suse 11 Tech Spec. This November 2015

  20. I just passed my Comptia linux + LX0-103 (part 1) today. However, I had no option to submit my scores to LPI as stated above. I had previously already registered with lpi as the guide says. Anybody know how I got about this?
